A History of Human-Powered Hydrofoils
The history of hopping-motion hydrofoils is sketchy as many hobbyists endeavored to perfect a unique water toy but did not document their efforts or promote themselves. It is not until recently that the history is much more detailed as commercial ventures have documented their efforts when they sought patents and trademarks.
1989 POGOFOIL
The Pogofoil was Parker McCready`s second attempt to power a hydrofoil via flapping wing propulsion. As seen above, it was being tested on Seattle’s Green Lake in
1990. It weighed about 50 lbs, with a speed of 11 mph, but was only good for a few hundred meters before the rider would tire.
The Pogofoil was the culmination of several years of experimental boat building, which included his first hydrofoil, the "Mutiny on the Boundary Layer." As McCready
states it was, “The overweight, over-mechanical, but working, predecessor to the sleeker Pogofoil.”

1998 TRAMPOFOIL
Alexander Sahlin, a Swedish engineer, invented the Trampofoil. It weighs 12 kgs. and used the flapping wing concept for propulsion.

2003-2004 INVENTIST AQUASKIPPER (TM)
The hopping-motion hydrofoil was improved and patented as the AquaSkipper by Shane Chen, CEO of Inventist, and a part of CID, Inc.
The patented spring mechanism and the unique aircraft aluminum structure are the secret to the success of the AquaSkipper. These improvements make the AquaSkipper
very maneuverable, easier to ride and to recover from a stall. The AquaSkipper can travel up to 17 miles per hour and it weighs less than 25 lbs.

Istoricul aparitiei procedeelor sportive de inot bazin.
01.3. FLUTURE - DELFIN

(*grafica American Swimming, ASCA 1991)
Despre noua tehnică s-au făcut precizări oficiale (vezi articolul "The dolfin-breast Stroke", Armbruster,Sieg -'Journal of Health and Physical Education, 1935 april 6:24), dar inovaţia a rămas fără ecou.

Mark Schubert Takes Leave of Absence as National Team Head Coach for USA Swimming; Jim Wood Named "Acting" National Team Director -- September 16, 2010

Updated September 16 with Jim Wood replacement information.

DALLAS, Texas, September 15, 2010. IN the middle of USA Swimming's annual convention in Dallas, Texas, Mark Schubert took a paid leave of absence effective immediately from his duties as USA Swimming's national team head coach.

The following day on Sept. 16, outgoing USA Swimming President Jim Wood was named the "acting" National Team Director.

A development that can only be described as shocking, USA Swimming released a statement to Swimming World saying that "Out of respect for individual privacy, and as a matter of policy, USA Swimming does not comment on personnel issues."

Swimming World confirmed through credible sources that the reason for the sudden announcement had nothing to do with the current sexual abuse issues confronting USA Swimming nor any other ethical, social or unlawful improprieties by Schubert.

However, it is noteworthy that Schubert's leave comes on the heels of an Athlete Partnership Plan championed by Schubert before it was rejected by the USOC. The plan was then retooled and hotly debated within USA Swimming until it became watered-down. A version was approved and will move on to the House of Delegates for final approved later this week.

Swimming World has placed phone calls to Schubert and will release more information as it becomes available to the public.

As an Olympic swim coach for the United States, Schubert has been a part of a record eight consecutive Olympiads, stretching back to the boycotted 1980 Games in Moscow. Schubert's coaching career expands almost 40 years, back to his days coaching high school swimmers in Ohio for two seasons. He moved to Mission Viejo, Calif., in 1972 and founded the Mission Viejo Nadadores, where he immediately became a successful coach, guiding some of the most notable swimmers in history to Olympic glory. Brian Goodell, Shirley Babashoff, Mike O'Brien, Dara Torres and Jesse Vassallo were just a few of the Olympic champions who dipped their toes into the Mission Viejo pool during Schubert's 13-year tenure, which resulted in 44 national team titles and numerous Coach of the Year accolades.
Schubert moved across the country to Mission Bay, Fla., where he brought the Mission Bay Makos to international prominence with such names as Dan Veatch and won nine more national team titles from 1986 to 1989.

Immediate success followed Schubert to the University of Texas, where his women's team won the NCAA title in 1990 and 1991 and top three finishes in 1992 and 1993. Along with coaching the collegiate team, Schubert was in charge of the Texas Aquatics age group team in Austin.

Schubert's final coaching stint was at the University of Southern California from 1993 to 2006, where he fostered the Olympic successes of Brad Bridgewater, Lenny Krayzelburg, Kristine Quance, Erik Vendt and Klete Keller. He also coached Janet Evans to her final Olympic appearance in 1996. Schubert has personally coached nearly 30 swimmers to spots on the USA Olympic team.

{this is my last letter to a website dealing with innovation ...}

Dear Sirs,
I am 74 years old, 60 of which were spent near the swimming pool, about 50 years of coaching with some modest successes... I've become interested by your activity, which I think can become a model for other organizations too...
I'm going to trust the discernment you must have, after so many successes, and I want to tell you about an idea that has no material end, and is not meant to bring a profit, but it can clarify the approach in reaching performance in swimming and other sports as well
Many years ago, around 1980, I've developed a new concept for swimming efficiently; initially, I started from a famous ancient quote 'festina lente' - and then I noticed that it works well for competitive swimming too.
As I was behind the Communist 'Iron Curtain' that prevented any contact with the outside world, my idea didn't reach the West at that time; it was completed in 1983 and published in the Magazine for Physical Education and Sports (no. 3/1983) in an article entitled 'The Biomechanical Efficiency Swimming Test (BEST)'. The article had a simple point - the efficiency of a swimmer is given by adding the number of strokes he needs to swim 50 meters with the number of seconds taken by this swim.
Going forward on this idea, I've tried to apply it to training children this way - as I was given the opportunity: I've asked them to swim as fast as they could but with the fewest number of strokes; surprisingly the children started to swim better, and ended up winning swimming competitions.
Then I had the proof that my concept had a practical utility, and I started to promote it... In 1995 I've discovered that American coaches (Hines, Hanulla, Maglischo, and recently also Bob Bowman / M. Phleps) had also independently arrived at the same conclusions. However, my formula is can be particularized for every swimmer, by taking his or her physical characteristics into account (see attachment, BEST definitions)
All this time, I've always been aware by the fact that the counting of the strokes had to be done automatically somehow... I tried to contact important companies, such as Speedo, in this respect, with little success, but last year, in UK, a company launched the Pool Mate watch that advertised this feature. I purchased a watch immediately, but was a little disappointed by its stroke counting accuracy and consistence...
Finally, I'm waiting that either Pool Mate improves and becomes the watch I've dreamed of since the 80's (accurate stroke counting), or that others understand my concept, its usefulness and the need to have such a tool for stroke counting - of course other features can be added such as wireless transmission of data to the coach, allowing real time feedback, etc.
With such support, the BEST concept could reach its true potential, and the training could become more scientific and better focused on optimal results.
Thank you,
MO
What do you think such a letter .. ...?
