THOMAS Lurz (GER) reinforced his lead by winning the sixth leg of the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup 2011 taking place in Shantou, China, on September 25. The reigning world champion in the 5km event took 1h54m22s95 to complete the race, being the only open water swimmer so far to collect two victories in this year's series. Among women, Emily Brunemann (USA) obtained her first podium appearance of the season, touching home in 2h04m52s41. In all, 28 men and 15 women from ten countries took part in the event. Nyad officially stopped swimming at 11 a.m. Eastern time, about 40 hours and 67 miles from her starting point in Havana. It marked nearly two days of medical drama, as well as near scares when she was visited by barracudas and an Oceanic white-tipped shark, according to posts on Nyad's website.
