Hmm, my one daughter has the strangest reflex. When she puts her face in
the water she gasps through her nose and sucks up lots of water.
Needless to say that induces panic long before she can get oriented
enough to swim towards me. My older daughter never did this. So it's
quite perplexing. She's very happy to push my head underwater, actually
she loves doing that.

Yes, I've seen some children doing that too; glad not too many! It's
difficult. Have you tried pouring water on her face in the tub, or
taking a shower? When she is older, she may be one of those who used
nose plugs or a mask that covers the nose. With an older sister, she'll
want to swim after her!

Thanks for the advice. She does the same thing in the bath or shower.
I've decided to try a snorkelling mask that covers her nose. At least
that will allow us to get on with things until we can resolve the
water-up-the-nose problem.

I think that would be best. She will need to practice breathing through
her mouth. Do it together - hold your nose and breathe, maybe your
other daughter too, so she will want to do it too. She won't feel
weird... Even better if all three of you use a mask for a while.
Hopefully, she'll get over it. I would love to know how it goes and
what works!
