Hi Alison...,
Here's an interesting discussion ... I've watched with great interest the evolution of 'American age groups-system'.
Ever since Mrs. Beth Kaufman [the 1950s], in California, initiated the system of competitions for children [idea belonged, in fact, Australians and ended the war in the Pacific, Beth 'transferred' with great success in the USA].
The age groups gave many famous champions [Don Sholander, Mark Spitz, and even famous U.S. swimming team's current [M.Phepls and others].
But to be a good coach in 'age groups-system' do not need too much science or academic titles - it takes young enthusiasm that will make children love water and the instructor ..., it takes the simplest exercises and especially, I think, need to love children so much that they can not force them, small to become great champions to 'your glory'.
I have learned in my 50 years of coaching, about 20-25000 of children to swim and some of them have come in junior champions even adulthood.
I wish you much success as many beginners learn to swim as well .....

Mircea,
Most of your average joe clubs in the US require their Head Coach to have age group coaching experience and the ability to recruit age group.
Science is vitally important and actually most US coaches I know have an education background. I started off as an 8 and under coach and now I coach swimmers 13-18. Coaching those younger swimmers and "paying my dues" kept me hungry.

@Andrew...> I note that we do not understand ... is correct: I write
with the help of Google translate and you speak English as I speak
Romanian; though I know about the work of Beth Kaufman [in California
1950 ...] and you do not know anything about it ... What kind of
scientific training is this?
I understand that you like the title of the chief points in the lead other coaches in charge of teaching swimming and promotion system age groups .... Ok, that's correct, but I like just to teach children to become good swimmers and when I was boss and responsible for all the coaches in my country ... I was very unhappy, because I have met many like you who 'knew' everything but probably not anything that ...
If you like to stay 'up' probably know what that means ... good luck ... but, if I were you, I would read again what little time I've posted before, good luck Andrew...

Mircea, I think we may both be missing each other in translation. The
science I was taught was in relation to the energy systems, how set up a
training cycle and season planing. To be honest none of that was vital
when I was coaching 8 and unders but because I was teaching those
things back to my 8 unders they were learning it.
Test sets are also a vital science piece. I do 3 per month for 3 weeks on 1 week off cycle. Learned this coaching 10 & unders.
The most important aspect that comes with experience and why I would prefer to promote an age group coach is that if you can break the stroke down and explain it to an 8 and under then it easy to explain to an 13 & over.
I do keep on my education requirements and attend a clinic or two a year. I read regularly and ask those within my regional professional circle. I have always felt that as a coach I need to be life long learner, that is how I know I am still passionate. I do not know everything and never will. Plus I have seen and learned multiple ways to accomplish the same task. I am actually quietly looking for a senior assistant position to help me better my coaching career.
I really think we are saying the same thing?

Dr Istvan Balyi from University of Victoria in Canada has some very
interesting information on bringing children from young ages through to
'seasoned' veterans. I find his work very enlightening.
Mircea Olaru •
Great info... please give me his email address, a nice day...

I'm not at liberty to give out emails, but also I don't have it. He is a
busy public speaker and is well known for his theories. I'm sure you
can find him though. You can find his information in most sports'
development philosophies; Athlete Long Term Development (UK) or Long
Term Athlete Development (Canada).

I liked Andrew's comment about starting off with the 8 and unders, as I
think that is where so many of us start coaching. I personally think it
is good to go back and work with the 8 and unders every so often, or
teach a 3-5 year old to swim. I coach master's year round, but in the
summer, I have a family I teach private lessons. They are very laid
back and really just want the kids to be safe and enjoy their back yard
pool. The kids are currently 8, 7 and 3 and I have been working with
them since the oldest was 5. It is a great experience to be able to see
swimming from a different angle. There have been more than a few
occasions when I have notice a stroke problem with one of the kids and
gone to practice and made my masters work on that skill.

Mircea, Dr. Istvan Balyi is extremely well-known in Canada but you can
probably find his details through a simple Google search. There will not
be a private email address for him given out, but there will probably
be a university email you can find. Dr. Balyi is very well known and
extremely competent. As a Canadian, I know this too and am in awe of his
knowledge and experience. Gary was providing a lead for us here in this
group :-)
My personal opinion is that any coach, no matter how "head" they become, needs to be able to teach little kids how to blow bubbles with their noses and their very first strokes. It might not be economically feasible for a club to have their head coach do this regularly, but no swimmer springs fully grown from the water, ready for international caliber training. They all start as little kids and we all, coaches, need to remember that and how to keep it simple. Helps us as communicators :-)

Michel dear... I apologize ... but do not know how it came to the doctor, I drew myself that resonates Hungarian name.
Bref, many times, especially when 'talking as a federal trainer' ... reproach national team coachs as not handle learning swimming.
The truth is that every lesson, every child in the water can give you more ideas or information that can then be applied to elite swimmers.
Thinking and the recent case of Michael P. who is interviewed, talking about the pleasure to be helpful to others to become like him.
I think Michel has a very good character and education - they are very necessary for a future champion, not a future 'stars' that any 'shooting star' can disappear quickly ...
Have a nice day....

Mircea, it's all okay. I am very certain there are incredible coaches
and researchers in Europe who are not familiar names to North Americans.
It's a big world we live in!
It can be a bit difficult to bridge the gap between 12 & Under coaching to age group. It can be just as difficult finding an assistant who actually proves out when they move into age group and age group elite coaching. I know I am on the look out always for that special someone who can handle it and what I look for is almost completely NOT on the sports science side of coaching.
Anyone can learn why we coach, and what we coach, but plain and simple speaking, until that swimmer becomes senior national finalist level, we are all still spending most of our time teaching swimmers. Young coaches have this incredible tool called the internet that didn't exist in this form, back in the days of 1200 baud external US Robotics modems :-) It is so very easy to find out WHAT to coach now. HOW to coach it becomes the issue.
That and personality fit with the head coach. Best assistant I have ever had was simply amazing. I would be turning around to ask him to do something, or for something, and many times he would already be handing me what I was about to ask for. Asked so many questions, thought about what I would say, asked more questions, then came up with his own brilliant ideas. All with no sports science background. When he graduated from a masters in civil engineering and a year later took on a job in his field, I lost one of the best coaches I have had the pleasure to work with.
So Andrew, I think what I am saying to you is keep at it! Persevere in your search for the right place to make the next step. It will take a bit of time to find the right place and you WILL find many wrong places along the way. Just keep at it :-)
