72 minutes...

That's how long someone hung around for last night and watched my squad train.

This swimmer is interested in joining the squad to improve his swimming - and last
night he was mesmerized by not just the speed of the swimmers...but how easy they made it look.

One of the things that make these swimmers look so effortless is their smooth freestyle entry.

Don't be fooled though. It's not just for looks. A smooth entry sets up your catch and pull (which are the key to your propulsion).

In this weeks video we look at two drills that we use to train a smooth freestyle entry.

Watch it now

I have a few spots left for tomorrows Melbourne Freestyle Clinic. If you'd like to learn how we help
swimmers of all abilities improve their speed and efficiency, click here. I'll also be announcing a Syndey clinic soon!

Perfectionarea antrenorilor de inot in Anglia

RAPs to recognise new Statement of Competency for swimming teachers

In December we announced details of how practising swimming teachers could achieve the new SkillsActive approved ASA Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Aquatics (QCF) qualification and be recognised by the new Register of Aquatic Professionals (RAPs).

Following feedback from the industry, the ASA has been working alongside SkillsActive, to find an alternative way for swimming teachers to join and remain on the RAPs by recognising competence, without the need to achieve the new Level 2 certification.

As an outcome of this the IoS is pleased to announce that there will shortly be a process whereby ASA Level 2 swimming teachers (enrolled or registered for the qualification post 2001) will be able to obtain a Statement of Competency. This will be free of charge and will need to be completed by the swimming teacher's current employer (or other equivalent role to be specified).

The purpose of the Statement of Competency will be to verify that the swimming teacher meets the assessment criteria of the new Level 2 Certificate, which is not covered by their existing qualification. The Statement will then enable them to join and/or stay on RAPs post 31st December 2015, without the need to achieve new certification (however, they must also renew membership annually).

Those who hold an ASA Level 2 Teaching Aquatics qualification achieved pre-2001, should contact the IoS or other ASA approved centre for information on an approach most suitable to them.

We appreciate there will still be swimming teachers who wish to achieve the new Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Aquatics (QCF) qualification. If this is the case they will need to complete one of the three routes announced in December 2013. The routes and prices are set on our website with the route being determined by the title of the qualification awarded, and whether it was awarded by the ASA or another UK awarding organisation. Those who hold the ASA Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Aquatics (QCF) achieved post January 2011 can achieve new certification free of charge by undertaking an online learning module.

We hope that the Statement of Competency will be a welcome solution for both our swimming teachers and the industry and we look forward to announcing further details on the process shortly.

Please contact the IoS on 01509 640 640 for further information.
