It's a small world...

That's what crossed my mind last week when I received
this email from a friend of a mutual friend.

It began like this:

"Hey Brent

I worked extensively and travelled with an elite swim squad
for 4 years before the Athens Olympics as a mind/body coach
and also was employed to travel on the Pro Surf Tour."

My interest was immediately piqued.

Working at an elite level in swimming and surfing?

If I could do only two things for the rest of my life -- it would
be those exact two things.

'I've gotta chat to this guy,' I thought to to myself.

So I gave him a call.

It turns out he worked closely with Tracey Menzies and
her squad leading up to the Athens Olympics. Her squad
included a few swimmers you might have heard of before...

Does Ian Thorpe ring a bell?

So I got him on the podcast and it turns he (Mark Breadner)
has some pretty interesting stories to share and some
awesome tips for getting into your peak performance state.

Listen to the podcast here

Stroke Count and Distance Per Stroke

Coaches often come from one of two schools of thought...

'Distance Per Stroke (Stroke Count) ' or 'Stroke Rate' being the most important factor in speed.

This biggest problem with this single-focus approach is that it's missing an important piece of
the puzzle. It ignores half of the speed equation which is Speed = Stroke Length x Stroke Rate.

Imagine someone giving you a bike and telling you that the fastest way to ride is at 200 rpm.

You'd need to shift down into a tiny gear and pedal like crazy. With each push of the pedal
you'd only be travelling a small distance. It doesn't make sense.

It's about finding the optimum distance per stroke and stroke rate that suits you.

In previous videos we've talked about stroke rate - now let's look at the importance of
distance per stroke and how to increase yours.

Going the distance with ASA badges

Going the distance with ASA badges

For children, one of the best things about learning to swim is getting the rewards at the end.
Designed to complement the 10 stages of the British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Framework, the Rainbow Distance Awards are a range of bright, cheerful badges and certificates to help keep children motivated while working through the Learn to Swim stages.
This range of 19 awards increase gradually in distance to help swimmers develop their confidence, ability and stroke techniques.
And badges aren't just motivational for children. The ASA Adult Awards provide structured development and targets for adult learners to reward progress.

New online Deaf-Friendly course

The National Deaf Children's Society and the ASA have teamed up to create the Deaf-Friendly Swimming i-Learn course.
