THE HOST CITY - KRUSEVAC

The city of Kruševac is located the central part of the Republic of Serbia. It covers the area of 854km² and includes 101 townships and 145.000 inhabitants in total. The Kruševac urban area has about 65,000 inhabitants. It is located in the valleys of West Morava River, Rasina River, between the Jastrebac, Kopaonik and Željin mountains.

The City of Kruševac is the centre of the Rasina District, which includes municipalities Aleksandrovac, Brus, Varvarin, Trstenik and Ćićevac. As a city rich in tradition and centuries of history, once the medieval Serbian capital, Kruševac today is a modern city, economic, administrative, cultural, health, education, information and sports centre of importance for the Rasina District and the Republic of Serbia.

Kruševac was founded in 1371, as a fortified town in the possession of Lord Lazar Hrebeljanović. The Lazarica Church (or Church of St. Stephen [Nemanja]) was built by Lazar between 1375–1378, in the Morava architectural style. It is mentioned in one of Lazar's edicts in 1387, as his seat, when he affirmed the rights of Venetian merchants on Serbian territory. In preparation for the Battle of Kosovo (1389) against the Ottoman Empire, the Serbian army assembled in the city. The site of Lazar's palace is marked by a ruined enclosure containing a fragment of the tower of his spouse Princess Milica, and according to legend, tidings of the defeat were brought to her by crows from the battlefield.

After the battle, the city was held by Princess Milica as her seat. The little remains of Lazar's city is the Kruševac Fortress, which was declared a Cultural Monument of Exceptional Importance in 1979. Several old Ottoman houses were left at the beginning of the 20th century, besides an old Turkish fountain and bath, which was known as Alacahisar (Aladža Hisar) during Ottoman rule between 1427-1833 (nominally to 1867) except Austrian occupations between 1688–1690 and 1717-1739.

The Town House, which used to be a Country Prefecture, is one of the most beautiful buildings of this kind in Serbia. Made according to the project of the architect Nikola Nestrovic, it was built in the period between 1898 and 1904, in neaclassical style, with strictly symmetrical proportions. The Mosaic hall is famous for its beauty: it's a festive hall for receptions, named after the mosaic complex "In the glory of Krusevac". It took almost 20 years for Mladen Srbinovic, an academic painter from Belgrade, to complete the floor and wall mosaic as well as lunettes. Srbinovic found the insipration for the mosaics in persons and events of the time when Krusevac was political and cultural center of Serbia.

At first, building was the domicile of the District and the County Prefecture, and after the Second World War, it was the domicile of the distric and county boards. In 1963 the facilities were taken over by the Municipality of Krusevac with the municipal and district courts. After the courts had been moved to a new building, the Town hall of the of the town of Krusevac remain there.

A large monument dedicated to the fallen Serbs at the Battle of Kosovo was sculptured by Petar Ubaković (1852–1910). As part of the monument is also a statue of the famous blind Serbian poet and guslar Filip Višnjić.
